POSITION: Logistics Assistant

REPORTS TO: Logistics and Operations Manager

DURATION: Full Time Seasonal

LOCATION: Boston, MA – Thompson Island

POSITION SUMMARY

The Logistics Assistant is responsible for assisting the Logistics and Operations Manager in providing food, materials, and equipment essential to Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center (TIOBEC) programs and staff. The primary duties will include readying food, supplies and equipment for a wide variety of programs and island departments; maintaining efficient issue/de-issue and repair systems; tracking and maintaining inventory, and assisting with ordering and restocking of medical supplies, food and other consumables. The ideal candidate possesses a passion for organization and efficient work habits, knowledge of contemporary outdoor gear and clothing, familiarity with a variety of outdoor pursuits (camping, backpacking, kayaking, challenge course, etc), and attentiveness to details. Housing on Thompson Island is included for the duration of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the Logistics facilities
• Maintain all island and waterfront first aid kits and medical equipment
• Repair kayaks, stoves, sleeping systems, clothing, and any other equipment pertaining to the functions of the Programs department
• Attend all required Program meetings
• Assist the Challenge Course Team with the cleaning and maintenance of TIOBEC’s climbing elements and gear
• Interest in working in instruction or within the Programs team long term
• At points in time, may be required to pick up other program responsibilities, including but not limited to, instructing, site managing, etc.

• Perform additional duties and responsibilities at the direction of the Logistics and Operations Manager and/or the Program Director and Sr. Island Officer

QUALIFICATIONS

• 1-2 years relevant field experience
• 1-2 years relevant logistics experience
• Competent in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Outlook
• Experience with equipment repair and maintenance

• Wilderness First Aid & CPR certification preferred

• Proficiency in backpacking and/or sea kayaking preferred
• Experience working with diverse communities
• Experience with food preparation and food service management a plus
• Experience with sea kayak repair a plus
• Experience with sewing a plus
• High level of interpersonal and social competence
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Valid Driver’s license and meet OB driving standards

WORK CONDITIONS

• Expected ongoing coordination and collaboration with all Program Instructors, Managers and Course Directors, as well as other island departments
• Environmental fluctuations are typical of the New England coast, and can include hot, humid weather, and unseasonably cool, rainy, and windy coastal weather; must be comfortable working outside in either of these extremes for extended periods of time
• Some overnights are required, including overnight kayak training (June 21-28)
• Some weekends required (will still be a 5 day work week, if so)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be 21 years of age or older
• Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs

• Must be able to be on feet an average of 5+ hours per day
